Brahma Tal trek is a great and easy winter option .The spectacular views of Himalayan range from the trail are one of the many reasons for doing this trek. Trek through the oaks and fir trees and then cross the steep paths. You also get glimpses of the Garhwal Mountains in the distance on a clear day. Never ending ridge lines, beautiful meadows, High altitude lakes, majestic peak views and fresh snow on the trail are compelling proposition for the Brahma Tal winter trek. The lake is a hidden and isolated, where, Lord Brahma meditated.
The peak view from the route is fascinating, from east to west you can see the High Himalayan ranges. On the right eastward direction we can see Mt.Mrigthuni, Mt.Trishul, and straight north the Mt.Bethartoli Himal and Mt.Nandaghunti. On the left westward side we can see the massive Mt.Chaukhamba, Mt.Neelkanth, Mt.Kamet, Mt.Hathi and Mt.Ghoda peaks.
Pickup from Kathgodam in the morning and reach Lohajung (7,650ft) which is around 220 Km away. The journey may take around 8/9 hours with a lunch break. The road is through the Kumaon region and mostly goes along wide spread valleys of Shivalik Himalaya. You will arrive in Lohajung by the evening & check into a guesthouse for the night. Spend some evening time in the small market of Lohajung. Night stay in home stay.
We start our trek from Lohajung base camp. We trek slowly upwards through the forest interspersed by a few village houses. The trail is also separated by a few water streams. Today’s trek will take around 5 hours to reach our campsite . The area is surrounded with thick oak forests and in winters. We will camp at Bakel Tal ground for the night. Bekhal Tal is only 5 minutes from here. You will visit lake in the afternoon with your guide.
We will take the main trail from next campsite .We will be at lake within 5 minutes .From lake we have to climb the ridge which is a continuous moderate climb for one and half hours. We continue our trek inside the forest with infrequent breaks. After completing this climb we reach the edge of the meadow. From here onward the view on our right, i.e., the north-east side unfolds with extended panorama. Peaks of Kumaon Himalaya like Mt.Maiktoli, Mt.Devtoli , Mt.Mrigthuni, Mt.Trishul and Mt.Nanda Ghunti, one by one. From top Called”Danda Dhar” we can easily spot the Brahma Tal. The lake of Brahmatal is small in size. We will find a camping spot by the lake & set up camps for the night. It can be very cold here in the months of winters but our camps & sleeping bags will keep us warm during the night.
Today we have to trek till Brahma Tal Top which called summit and return back to campsite. The time taken to reach the summit is approximately 4-5 hours from campsite. You can choose to carry a daypack & leave your backpack in the camps as we will be returning to the same camp. The trail followed is a curvy route through the forest. It offers fabulous views of the mighty Himalayas especially Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nandaghunti which lie side by side separated majorly by Ronti Saddle. We spend some time at the summit enjoying the amazing views and we slowly return back to the camp.
Today we will prepare ourselves for descent back to Lohajung through the same forested trails passing by several mountain villages on the slopes. This day could be used to rest as well as explore the small town.
Today after breakfast leave from Loharjung to Kathgodam for the journey back home. You will reach Kathgodam by around 5 pm in the evening. But we recommend booking further trains / bus to back home only scheduled after 08 pm. to keep the extra buffer time in hand.
